VAT in Malta
Malta Value-added tax (VAT) is a consumption tax levied on the majority of goods and services sold or imported in the country.
The VAT system in Malta is also supported by the EU VAT requirements, i.e., the same basic rules are applicable there as in other EU countries.
- Standard Rate: 18%
- Lowest Level: 7 percent (accommodation and energy)
- Zero Rate: 0% (exports, international supplies)
- Exempt: Education, healthcare, postal services
Companies subject to VAT are required to submit VAT returns to the Commissioner for Revenue (CFR) quarterly.
Example 1: Adding VAT to a Price (18%)
- You are a small business owner and you will sell a product with a price of 250 Euros (without VAT).
- Malta’s standard VAT rate is 18%.
- Calculation:
- VAT = 18% of €250 = €45
- Total Price (including VAT) = €250 + €45 = €295
- Result:
- The VAT of 18 percent will add to the final price of a product of 250, which will be 295.
Example 2: Removing VAT from a Total Price (18%)
- Suppose that you have a total invoice of 354, including VAT, the amount before the latter is 300, and the difference between the two is 54.
- Calculation:
- Net Amount = €354 ÷ 1.18 = €300
- VAT = €354 − €300 = €54
- Result:
- Assuming that you have an overall invoice of 354 (including VAT), the figure before VAT is 300, and the difference between the two is 54.
