German Grade Conversion Formula

The official DAAD formula used for conversion is:

German Grade = 1 + 3 × (Maximum Grade − Obtained Grade) ÷ (Maximum Grade − Minimum Passing Grade)

Step-by-Step Explanation

  1. Identify the maximum grade in your home country.
  2. Find the minimum passing grade.
  3. Insert your obtained grade/percentage.
  4. Apply the formula to get the German equivalent.

Example Calculation

  • Maximum Grade: 100%
  • Minimum Passing Grade: 40%
  • Obtained Grade: 85%

German Grade = 1 + 3 × (100 − 85) ÷ (100 − 40)
German Grade = 1 + 3 × (15 ÷ 60)
German Grade = 1 + 3 × 0.25
German Grade = 1.75 (Gut / Good)

Here’s the standard German grade scale:

German GradeMeaningEquivalent in English
1.0 – 1.5Sehr GutVery Good / Excellent
1.6 – 2.5GutGood
2.6 – 3.5BefriedigendSatisfactory
3.6 – 4.0AusreichendSufficient
4.1 – 5.0Nicht BestandenFail / Not Passed

German universities have formulas to standardise results, as each country has its own grading system. DAAD and Bavarian are the two most common.

Formula:
German Grade = 1 + 3 (maxScore- obtainedScore)/(maxScore- minPassingScore)

Example:

  • Max Score = 100
  • Passing Score = 40
  • Your Score = 85

German Grade = 1 + 3 × (100 – 85) ÷ (100 – 40)
= 1.75 (Good)

Formula:
German Grade = (maxGrade-min Grade) (1-obtainedScore/maxScore) +min Grade.

Example:

  • Max Grade = 4.0
  • Min Grade = 2.0 (passing)
  • Obtained = 3.6

German Grade = (4 – 2) × (1 – 3.6 ÷ 4) + 2
= 1.5 (Excellent)
